What does our English ministry in Cluj, Romania offer its parishioners? For many, it provides community and connection in a foreign land. Our missionaries, Pastors Michael and Terri Church, share the story of a baptism in the Pentecost issue of The News from Cluj.
Over 400 voting members came together in Tarrytown over the weekend to worship, elect leaders, approve resolutions, celebrate our diversity, and
hear stories of ministry from across the synod. You can read the adopted resolutions and see who was elected Synod Council members and Churchwide Assembly voting members by downloading the Summary of Actions. Additional photos, videos, and reports will be available soon.
From Pastor Anderson,
In the Gospel according to John, Christ steps away from the last supper and takes time to wash the disciples feet. Then Christ says to them “I give you a new
commandment…to love one another as I have first loved you.” This commandment, something new and different than what had been given by God before, is given to all of us. We are all invited to step beyond life as we have known it and into a new life, a life where God’s love is shown forth through us. Whether we recognize it or not, we are all searching to understand how God intersects with our lives and how our lives intersect with the world, and what we should do about it all.
New York (MNYS) In Septemer 2009, Pastors Michael and Terri Church left for Cluj, Romania to start a new English-language ministry in cooperation with our companion synod in Romania. Our missionaries in Romania, Pastors Michael and Terri Church, share the story of Easter celebrations in Cluj through their latest bulletin insert. Find out and share what's happening.
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Some pastors, particularly bishops in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), wear a cross. But the Rev. Richard L. Young
bears a stethoscope. Serving as pastor of six Lutheran congregations in Guyana, Young is also a licensed physician tending simultaneously to the spiritual and medical well-being of people.
"My call with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana through ELCA Global Mission is 50 percent medical and 50 percent pastoral work," said Young. Although the need for medical care can be great in Guyana, people there have tended to focus more on Young's call as pastor.
"I was struck by the fact that the spiritual needs of Guyanese were often placed above their physical ones. Prayer will often be asked first and medicine comes second," he said.
Young is an ELCA missionary serving in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guyana (ELCG). The ELCG and ELCA are members of the Lutheran World Federation, Geneva, and both share a church-to-church relationship through ELCA Global Mission. The ELCG has 5,000 members in 46 congregations in 13 multi-point parishes.
