"...hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." (Romans 5:5)
Life is a hope-filled journey, buoyed by the grace of God.
Oh, it is certainly easy to become disillusioned in this life, disappointed by all the things that do not go our way at work, at home, in our families and in our communities. Yet for those who strive to follow Christ the saying is not "my way or the highway," but rather "not my way but God's way be revealed." We might start each day with a simple prayer that expands this thought ever so slightly, such as "God help me set my ways aside in favor of learning Your ways."
Such prayer will not guarantee our ability to hear God's will and ways perfectly. After all, we are only human, and we are often caught up in sin. Yet as Paul reminds us in the 5th chapter of Romans, God's love has been poured into our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our hope rests not on our will and ways, nor even our attempts to discern God's way in our lives. Our hope is God-hope and it is born and flourishes because the love of God in the Holy Spirit continues to pour itself into our hearts and lives. This is hope we can count on, hope that can not be changed like our moods and our whims. And this is hope that can be shared, with friends, family, and strangers alike, all of us made neighbors by God's love pouring hope into our hearts and lives.
